It works by displaying the location of businesses that have registered with Google Places and are relevant to the user’s search on a small map. Links to websites that belong to these businesses appear next to the map.
Registration for Google Places is free. In addition to location and web address, businesses can also include opening times and photos of their business or products. Google Places is especially important for businesses that have a predominantly local customer base or whose customers are searching for something in a certain location (e.g. hotels, amusement parks, etc.).
